What You Need To Know.
When you and your company purchases ecommerce software you will have two options. They are:
- Off-The-Shelf
- Hosted (SaaS - Software as a Service)
At TrinityIP we can accomodate either model and there are benefits to each depending on your specific needs.
Off-The-Shelf
Off-the-shelf is buying or using free open source ecommerce software where you host the software on your shared or dedicated server. There typically is just a one-time fee to purchase the software, while some may charge annual fees.
Pros:
- The ability to customize features by modifying existing functionality or adding new functionality to the core system
- You can have it on your own server, especially if you prefer to keep most things in house
- Price, typically this is just a one-time fee for small business focused ecommerce solutions with no ongoing fees for the ecommerce software
- Typically allows for unlimited products, depending on your server space
Cons:
- To upgrade you must do this manually or hire the maker of the software
- You must find a host which meets the software minimum requirements
Hosted (SaaS):
Pros:
- Hosting and Ecommerce packaged into one solution
- Upgrades will automatically be applied (typically)
Cons:
- Can be more than off-the-shelf with the monthly fees from $50 to $500 monthly
- Depending on the plan, you may be limited to how many products you can have
- Typically customization is not an option as all users must share the same code base so if you want to add or modify existing features you are out of luck
- You may like the ecommerce platform, but hate the hosting portion, but you can’t separate the two and you are either stuck with the SaaS solution or you need to start all over with a brand new ecommerce solution
Bottom line, look at the pros and cons list above and match it up with your needs to figure out what solution is best for you or your company.
